Phelisanong operates the Mamello English Medium Primary School, which is attended by children from surrounding villages as well as residents of the Centre. This creates a unique integrated learning environment, fostering respect and tolerance for people with varying abilities and needs. English immersion gives the children a head start towards higher education, and a developing school library opens the world of reading to Basotho children. Sports, art, and music are integrated into the curriculum, along with life skills such as agriculture, nutrition, and HIV/AIDS awareness.
The school operates with very little outside funding and many families are unable to pay for expenses like stationary, books, and food. The lack of resources and range of needs of the children places increased pressures on teachers to provide remedial supports to children with special needs and on the Centre to meet the needs of the students.
In addition to running the school, Phelisanong has a scholarship program that enables needy and deserving students to attend high school by helping to cover their school fees and living expenses. A tertiary and vocational scholarship program is also open to Phelisanong volunteers, disabled youth, and staff who wish to pursue higher education in health, education, and vocational studies. This program aims to build the skills base of the project team and provide sustainable livelihood to people with disabilities.
